An online joint lecture co-organised by SCCL and EdUHK
For the sake of promoting Chinese Language education research and academic exchange and communication, Singapore Centre for Chinese Language (SCCL), the Centre for Research on Chinese Language and Education (CRCLE) and the Department of Chinese Language Studies (CHL) of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) co-organised a virtual joint lecture on 27th August 2021. The topic of the joint lecture is "Chinese Language Learning in Multilingual and Multicultural Context".
The joint lecture was hosted by Dr Liao Xian from EdUHK, and the main speakers were Prof Leung Pui Wan Pamela (EdUHK) and Dr Li Li (SCCL). Prof Leung gave a lecture titled "Seize the Opportunity of Learning Chinese as Second Language: Learning China History in Chinese". Taking a new set of China history instructional materials as an example, Prof Leung investigated the basic vocabulary of some key topics like political evolution, cultural characteristics, and Hong Kong's development, as well as the style features of academic languages in the textbooks of typical subjects. She finally gave some suggestions on the subject of teaching China History in Chinese language for the students whose native language is not Chinese. Dr Li Li shared her study on "Singaporean Primary Students' Chinese Oral Language Competence and Narrative Skills". She introduced a study that explored the relationship between narrative skills of Singapore primary school students learning Chinese language, their Chinese language ability, and the children's home language environment. She shared the teaching design of interventions for Singapore children's Chinese narrative skills, the teaching outcome and its implications for classroom practices.
There were nearly 90 scholars and students attending this joint lecture. It was the first lecture jointly organized by SCCL and EdUHK. The two parties will continue to co-host lectures and academic events in the year of 2022.
