Improving Teaching and Learning of Primary Reading Using Assessments

Course Overview

This course introduces the method of item analysis using Excel and the implications of item analysis results for item setting and reading instruction.

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Learn the basic knowledge of language assessment and understand the fundamental principles.
  • Apply principles learned to classroom practices.

  • Equip themselves with the essential steps of designing classroom language tests.

  • Learn and practice how to design classroom language tests based on knowledge and principles learned.
  • Analyse effectiveness of reading assessment through data.

Course Content

The course covers the following topics:

  • Basic knowledge and fundamental principles of language assessment.
  • Principles of language assessment and their application to classroom practices.
  • Essential steps of designing classroom language tests.
  • Designing of classroom language tests based on knowledge and principles learned.
  • Group hands-on session with sharing.
  • Analysing of assessment effectiveness through basic testing tool.
