Abstract
Since the release of iPad in 2010, tons of mobile applications have been developed. Based on a schoolbased research, this paper investigates the use of mobile application in free association writing class and examines its teaching outcome. The research employed free association technique as a main teaching strategy, mindmapping and brainstorming as secondary teaching strategies. Effectiveness of using mobile application in class was examined through class observation, teacher's interviews and analyses of students' writings. Results suggest that the use of mobile applications combined with the strategies of free association technique, mind-mapping and brainstorming had enhanced student's writing ability and interest. The use of mobile applications is less time consuming compared with the traditional mind-map edited with paper and pencil. However, thorough preparation beforehand is needed when using mobile applications in class. Besides, teaching strategies should be the main concern, and mobile applications should not overtake its position. Mobile applications chosen must be closely engaged with teaching content. Classroom management is also imperative with the use of mobile applications in class.
