Abstract
This study aims to investigate the processes of and difficultiesin Chinese narrative writing among lower secondary students in Singapore. Around 300 lower secondary students taking three different Chinese courses (i.e., Higher Chinese, Express, and Normal Academic) were invited to complete a writing assessment task and two questionnaires which tap into their strategy use and perceived difficulties in writing Chinese essays. Additionally, six students of different writing levelswere selected to participate in a think-aloud data collection. Findings from this study provide useful information about Singapore lower secondary students' current attainment and difficulties in Chinese narrative essay writing.
