The book is a practical guide to writing Chinese compositions specially written for Singapore students. It introduces 43 basic writing techniques grouped into five categories: (i) content organisation, (ii) narration, (iii) characterisation and description, (iv) rhetorical devices, and (v) expressive techniques. Revision exercises are provided at the end of the book to help students consolidate their learning. Every writing technique is furnished with examples, analyses and exercises. Some of the examples are taken from the latest Chinese language textbooks compiled by the Curriculum Planning and Development Division, Ministry of Education, Singapore. Therefore, students can learn the writing skills from texts they are familiar with. This revised edition also adds a chapter titled "A Note to Teachers", explaining the reasons for adopting a purpose-oriented, assessment-based approach to teaching writing strategies. The book is suitable not only for secondary teachers and students, but also for teachers and students from upper primary schools and junior colleges.
