Introduction

Edited by scholar-writer Associate Professor Tan Chee Lay, Wrapping Dumplings with Pandan Leaves: Critical Essays on Selected Singapore Chinese Literary Works is a collection of 16 critical articles on selected Singapore Chinese literary works in different genres, including novel, prose, poetry and play. Most of the articles are written by the editor's students in the master's degree and Postgraduate Diploma in Education programmes of the National Institute Education, Singapore. Besides the critical articles, the original texts are included in this book for the readers to reread and rediscover the deeper significance of these literary pieces. While Singapore Chinese literary works are voluminous, the lacking of critical essays on Singapore Chinese literature is regrettably prominent.

This book a good beginning effort to help fill the gap.
