The Certificate/Diploma in Quantitative Language Research Programme aims to equip Chinese Language teachers with the necessary understanding and skills so as to enable them to conduct quantitative studies with the ultimate goal of enhancing their students’ learning of Chinese Language.
As part of the programme, the present module introduces the participants to:
1.Define the statistical terms
2.Choose the suitable statistical analysis
3.Interpret the results of analysis
The content of the course is as follows:
1.Central tendency: Describe students’ general level of test performance using
2.Variability: Describe students’ individual differences in test performance using
• Standard deviation
• Inter-quartile range
3.Effect size: Compare group performance using standardized mean difference
4.The t-test: Compare group performance using the inferential statistic and note the limitations of the t-value.
5.Correlation coefficients: Relate the performance in two sets of test results using
• Pearson’ correlation coefficient
• Spearman’s correlation coefficient
